Rhapsody in Sandstone and Laterite

If the very thought Angkor was a Rhapsody,  each Temple Complex will be a poem in itself. Each so different, yet so similar because each one is suffering the same fate. Read Shelley or Keats or the great India lover Rudyard Kipling or anyone else. The core idea remains the same – how to express deep human emotions such that good of humanity is progressed. I have yet to read a poem that means ill of us. Here at Angkor, it is poetry written in Sandstone and Laterite by great sages as poets who were men & women of deep wisdom; were sent by Him to this planet to help us minor mortals  learn ways to lead our lives. Here is one opportunity with us, the men & women of a modern age to try and fathom that deep thought. Let us try to.

To that extent it might be well worth delving a little into the building materials used at Angkor for this poetry has been written in this language of stones. It might come in handy to a prospective student of this Academic  discipline or a future pilgrim.

At Angkor, grey and pink sandstones have been used while laterite, which actually is soil before it meets the sun and air when it hardens into stoney material, has been used as such. Physically, both Sandstone as well as Laterite are porous materials and both have been  used in building industry since beginning. Sandstone being the harder & heavier of the two.  First, the sandstone.

Be it the main quadrangle of University of Sydney known as the Sandstone University or Angkor Wat, sandstone has been used extensively in buildings. So much so that the famous Sandstone statue Maria Immaculata by Fidelis Sporer, around 1770, Freiburg, Germany bears the same material as does a 17000 years old oil lamp found in the caves near Lascaux, France. Sandstone, thence has well established usage for sculpting besides a material for all the other building works.

Sandstone a sedimentary rock made of quartz, feldspar and lithic fragments, its  most common cementing materials are silica and calcium carbonate, which are often derived either from dissolution or from alteration of sand after it was buried. It is hard (hardness of  6-7 on the Mohs’ Scale) and the particle/grain size is 0.0625-to-2-millimetre. Some sandstones are resistant to weathering, yet are easy to work upon. This makes sandstone a common building and paving material and that exactly is the characteristic of sandstone which has been exploited at Angkor very well.

Laterite on the other hand is both a soil and a rock type, rich in iron and aluminium, and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas, as obtaining around Angkor. Almost 40% of earth’s ground area is covered in laterite. Once hard, it acts like rock, is porous, light and easy to work upon and can be cut into brick like pieces. It is generally red & black in colour; red more predominantly available in free nature.

Found in the mountains about 40 kilometers from present Angkor Temples, sandstone and laterite were sourced to build these temples from those mountain plateau of Phnom Kulen (Mountain of the Lychees). It is however, interesting to learn that nearly thousand years later, neither laterite bricks have still lost their shape  nor sandstone, its integrity.

Upon closer scrutiny one finds that almost in all the wall works around these temples a as also in the main Temples as sub-structure, laterite has been used at Angkor. Chief reason for that being that soil bearing capacity (SBC) of soil obtaining at Angkor might be such that any overloading with heavier sandstone would have led to differential settlement thereby damaging the main structures. Besides, the water table being high, laterite also serves another primary purpose of absorbing excess water thereby saving the main structures of its ill-effects. At places,  however, one can still see differential settlement of the underlying soil, especially in walls wherever these are close to water line.

But all in all, those, who might not have possessed modern building technologies that we possess today, were well aware of these nuances. One can find elaborate mention of these aspects of building works in different books available on Temple construction in India. We must admire their wisdom & farsightedness, for our buildings only have a life span of, say, 75 years whereas those made by them are already nearly 1000 and counting.
